Summer Rock Camp!

Girls Rock Philly’s Summer Rock Camp is a week-long program featuring instrument instruction, workshops, visiting artists, band practice, a showcase and a day in the recording studio. Campers have instrument instruction every day in groups of 3-5 organized by skill level and age.

What is camp?

Monday to Friday: Campers form bands. In their bands, they will write at least 1 original song collaboratively. Bands will be assisted by coaches and adult mentors. Campers also attend workshops on topics ranging from songwriting to improvisation to self-defense.

Saturday and Sunday: Bands perform their original songs at a showcase and then spend the next day at the recording studio.

Where is camp?

Teen Session & Youth Session of Rock Camp will take place at HARDY WILLIAMS HIGH — MASTERY CHARTER located at 5400 Warrington Ave., 19143.

Public transportation options:
A few blocks from the 13 Trolley Stop @ 54th and Chester Ave.
A mile from the 34 Trolley Stop @ 55th and Baltimore Ave.
Right next to a 52 Bus Stop.

Please note: Hardy Williams is ADA accessible. There is a ramp into the main building. Camp will be held on the 1st floor of the school. GRP will work to accommodate camper needs to the best of our ability. As an organization, we will continue to work towards securing ADA accessible spaces for our programs and events.

Instrument Assignments

We aim to give every camper their first or second choice, however some years certain instruments are way more popular than others, which means we have to do a little extra work to make it all fit! We want to create a balanced and instrument-diverse camp! So… for example check out the bass — really! Do you like both drums and guitar? Well, bass is kind of like a mixture of the two. Totally awesome!

You cannot change your instrument preferences after you send in your application and you cannot change the instrument you’re assigned before or during the camp session.

Here are some ideas: write a letter, draw a picture, make a collage, record or write a song or poem, etc. You don’t have to think about this like an essay for school – it should be fun! We cannot review your application until we receive this piece! To submit your piece, you can: Include the piece with your application or email it to camp@girlsrockphilly.org. The subject line should be: “first and last name Express Yourself.”

Tuition and Costs

Tuition is sliding scale between $50-$450.

A sliding scale is a tool to ensure folks have equitable access to experiences like GRP’s Summer Camp, regardless of financial resources. We ask for your active participation in deciding your contribution. If a sliding scale is implemented effectively, everyone pays a similar percentage of their income for tuition. This way, the cost of camp is not pocket change for some folks and a big commitment for other folks. While GRP is a small organization, we make sliding scale a priority because we acknowledge that we live in a world of differing privileges and income disparities. We can also provide lunch for campers as well as tokens for transportation.

The below chart is a suggested guideline created by matching annual household income with a suggested tuition payment, assuming a household of 3-5 people.

Annual Household Income = Suggested Tuition

less than $20,000 = <$50 or full scholarship
$20,000 to $30,000 = $50 – $100
$30,000 to $50,000 = $100 – $200
$50,000 to $70,000 = $200 – $300
more than $70,000 = $400 +

You will receive an invoice with your camper’s acceptance packet.

If you have any questions about tuition, please contact us!

Application Fee: The application fee for both returning and new campers is $10. This fee also helps to cover the costs of processing the many applications that we receive. If this application fee poses a problem, please contact GRP at camp@girlsrockphilly.org.
